Hanorah means honor.
BIO / HANORAH
Hanorah is an interior design studio for homeowners who want to honor their home’s history by taking inspiration from design legacies and local contexts.
Hanorah is an interior design practice by Morgan McElwee. A lifelong enthusiast of architecture, art, and design, Morgan carefully restored and reimagined her own mid-century home with a trusted team of experts — architects, contractors, millworkers, tile experts — who she has continued to collaborate with on projects in and beyond the Los Angeles area.
Her love of architecture and art history manifests in a reverence for the principles of modernist architects and designers the she aims to bring into each project and adapt for the needs of homeowners and builders today.
Informed by history, Hanorah focuses on interiors renovation and building projects for Mid-Century and Craftsman style residences.
Hanorah is also my grandmother’s name.
Glass knobs on creaky wood doors that never stayed closed, handpainted “rugs” covering oil spills on hundred year old wood floors, sea shells strung from door frames, family photos stuck under every glass table top in the house, bed quilts that matched the wallpaper that matched the window treatments.
Hanorah’s home on the shore was my introduction to cherishing old houses and creating a sense of place through references to histories — personal, design, environmental.
